Original John C. Carlson Ltd plate-and-frame filter press – ex-distillery equipment

A superb piece of traditional British distillery equipment, this John C. Carlson Ltd filter press was originally used within a working distillery for the filtration and clarification of spirit.

This is one of three Carlson filter presses currently available.

Carlson was established by John C. Carlson in 1923 and has a long history of manufacturing solid/liquid filtration equipment. The company has been based at Butts Mill, Barnoldswick since 1950 and became particularly well established in the whisky, wine and brewing industries.

Description

This is a traditional plate-and-frame / sheet filter press, built around a substantial metal frame with a large mechanical screw-closing arrangement. The screw compresses the filter plate assembly to form the sealed filtration system through which the liquid is pumped.

The machine retains its impressive bank of filter plates together with associated pipework, valves and instrumentation. Of particular interest is the original John C. Carlson dual-scale pressure gauge, graduated to 70 lb/in² (psi) and 50 metres of water.

Carlson's own literature confirms that the company manufactured plate-and-frame and sheet filter presses specifically for applications including distilled spirits, with filter media used to remove suspended material and clarify the liquid.
